Letter from the Chair - December 20, 2012

2012 is coming to a close and the end of the Council's grant in August 2013 is quickly approaching.  As I look forward to 2013, it's easy to see how much work is left to complete before the end of our grant. Our dedicated Council Members and staff are ready to complete this important work and continue to share our successes with you.  We have lots of exciting things coming in January, including new documents and new RFP opportunities.

As you may have seen in an email on Monday, the Council released an RFP to complete the design and development of the marketing materials for our statewide public awareness campaign.  Another RFP is coming in January to develop the Texas Early Childhood Professional Development System.  If you know of qualified individuals and organizations that could be interested in applying, please share these opportunities.

On December 5, 2012, the Council hosted an early childhood policy meeting at the Texas Capitol in Austin, Charting Texas' Future: An Open House at the Capitol.  Welcoming legislative staffers and early childhood policymakers and advocates, the Council shared several of our important initiatives and invited participants to discuss the sustainability of these initiatives in the future.  Learn more about the meeting, see photos, and download documents from the meeting here.  During the event, I spoke about the Council's work to develop the Texas Early Childhood Professional Development System and the new Infant, Toddler, and Three-Year-Old Early Learning Guidelines.  We had wonderful discussion on these initiatives and the others discussed at the meeting.  Thank you to everyone who was able to attend!

For the Council, 2013 will begin with the release of two important documents for early childhood professionals and parents.  In January, we will release new Core Competencies for Early Childhood Practitioners and Administrators on our website.  Also in January, we will release the new Infant, Toddler, and Three-Year-Old Early Learning Guidelines on our website.  Each of these documents is many months in the making.  Look for an announcement email when each of these documents is available online.

Finally, the four communities awarded grants for the Texas Community Campaign for School Readiness are also thinking about sustainability.  Each community will produce a final report of their work over the last two years and their plan for the future - using the data collected in their community, how will the communities implement strategic change in their early childhood systems?  The communities will develop their final report over the next few months.  We will share these final reports on our website in the summer.

Happy holidays to you and your family and friends!  Thank you for your continued support of the Council and our work to improve school readiness in Texas.
