Council Job Posting: Public Policy Intern

Job Description:

The Texas Early Learning Council, housed at the Children's Learning Institute at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), is seeking a Public Policy Intern.  The intern will work under the supervision of the Council's Manager and collaborate with Council staff and Governor appointed Council Members, as well as representatives from Texas state agencies and commissions to complete projects.  The intern's duties may include research, writing projects, data analysis, developing social media and website content, written product design, and other duties as assigned.  The public policy intern will complete one major research project that concludes with a paper.  This document will be distributed statewide to early care and education stakeholders.  There will also be opportunities to attend major early care and education events, represent the Council publicly, and to interact with state leaders, advocates, and other stakeholders.  We seek a self-motivator able to operate independently and as part of a team.  This position will be located in Houston, Texas.


Currently enrolled in a graduate program in social work, education, child development, public relations, public health, public administration, public policy, or a related field.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively manage time and priorities are a must.

Note: This is a 10-week internship from June 4 to August 10, 2012.  Start and end dates may be flexible.

Preferred Skills: Advanced writing and editing, working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, working knowledge of desktop publishing software, use of social media, and data analysis.

Although not mandatory, preference will be given to applicants with experience or coursework in early childhood education and/or education policy.
